These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles' pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. In this book he brings together and assesses the large and disparate literature on these subjects and provides an up-to-date overview of new research findings. Key issues addressed include: the impact of ability, risk, personal characteristics and the macroeconomy on entrepreneurship; issues involved in raising finance for entrepreneurial ventures, with an emphasis on the market failures that can arise as a consequence of asymmetric information; the job creation performance of the self-employed; the growth, innovation and exit behaviour of new ventures and small firms; and the appropriate role for governments interested in promoting self-employment and entrepreneurship. Can two or more emotions be shown simultaneously? Can judgments of emotion from facial behavior be accurate? What are the similarities and differences in facial behavior across cultures? These and other major questions which have been asked about human facial expression of emotion are examined here in Emotion in the Human Face, the first volume to evaluate and integrate critically all quantitative research conducted since 1914 on this particular psychological phenomenon. Including results from yet unpublished studies, the volume also provides conceptual and methodological guidelines for future research. Among the topics covered are the definition of emotion, sampling emotions, emotion words and categories in judgment studies, methods of recording, and the relative contribution of facial behavior and contextual information to the judgment of emotion. Of special importance are the individual chapters on the question of accuracy in judging emotion from facial behavior and the controversial issue concerning universal expressions of emotion. In many cases, the authors directly contradict, with tables and other full documentation, previous misimpressions by influential reviewers of the literature. For college courses in expressive behavior, nonverbal communication, and person perception, Emotion in the Human Face will also be of interest to students and researchers in anthropology, ethology, sociology, and biology. Those concerned with personnel, management, interviews, the law, and other related fields will be able to gain through this volume a better appreciation of how a field of behavioral science progresses - the problems, mistakes, and challenges - and how experiments conducted over five decades fit together to produce answers and new avenues of research., Pergamon Press, 1972, 2.5, Bloomsbury Wildlife, AUG 2022. 304, 400 col photos. . CONTENT: Women have been holding their own in a man s world since the beginning of time, and the story of hard-working, diminutive Miss Harriet Colfax who kept the Michigan City Lighthouse going for 43 years is proof of this. In Miss Colfax s Light, by attorney, teacher, and author Aimee Bissonette, 37-year-old Harriet Colfax follows her brother to Indiana to start a newspaper, but when he gets sick and moves away, she has no money, no job and nowhere to live. She decides to take a job as a lighthouse keeper because it does more than pay a good salary ($350 a year a whopping amount back then), it also gives her a place to live. For the next 43 years, Harriet cleans, paints, varnishes wood, carries buckets of whale oil up and down stairs to light the tower lantern, and keeps copious notes in the lighthouse log. She braves raging winds and biting cold, and she even experiences brushes with death when the city builds a long catwalk that stretches 1500 feet out across the lake and places a lamp at the end of it, because it s Harriet s job to keep that lamp lit, even if it means getting swept off of the catwalk in the process. When yet another light is added on the other side of the lake, Harriet has to take oars in hand and row herself across to keep it lit. And though the Lighthouse Inspector often refuses to send help, Harriet somehow manages to keep the light going for all the sailors and seamen who may need it to guide them home. Miss Colfax s Light definitely has that wow factor. The thought of this tiny woman braving hard work and solitude from age 37 until she finally retired at age 80 is something to admire. According to an Author s Note in back of the book, In all her years of service, Harriet s Michigan City lights never failed to shine. In fact, Harriet was so faithful in her service that ship captains called her lighthouse Old Faithful. Ms. Bissonette s prose is lyrical and sweet, and easily whisks readers back to the simple and rustic America of yesteryear that history buffs love reading about. The book is packed to the rim with details that may have seemed mundane had another writer tackled such a subject; after all, cooking, cleaning, painting and toting buckets full of liquid are not the most exciting things in the world, and yet Ms. Bissonette manages to keep readers thoroughly engaged and cheering Miss Colfax s every accomplishment. Eileen Ryan Ewen s illustrations are the icing on the cake for this book. The scenes center around a dark, turbulent ocean, and most of the pictures include raging winds, billowing clouds, tossing boats or ships, and the ever-vigilant Miss Colfax tending to her light. This book is perfect for Women s History Month, an American History classroom, a discussion on various occupations, or as an example of the true meaning of the word commitment. Indeed, if a reader looks up the word commitment in the dictionary and happens to see Miss Colfax s work-worn but determined face beside the word, it wouldn t be a surprise at all. An informative Author s Note, Harriet s journal entries and a Glossary of Lighthouse Terms are very helpful to the story. Please See All Photos This Work Takes Simple Information About How People Relate To Each Other In A Completely Artificial Environment - The Workplace - And Uses It To Promote Your Rise Up The Ladder Of Success., Pearson Education Canada, 2009, 6, ISBN: 9780521148818Cambridge University Press, 22 November 2010Paperback, 438 pagesThis book is a unique examination of qualitative research in the social sciences, raising and answering the question of why we do this kind of investigation. Rather than offering advice on how to conduct qualitative research, it explores the multiple roots of qualitative research - including phenomenology, hermeneutics, and critical theory - in order to diagnose the current state of play and recommend an alternative. The diagnosis is that much qualitative research today continues to employ the mind-world dualism that is typical of traditional experimental investigation. The recommendation is that we focus on constitution: the relationship of mutual formation between a form of life and its members. Michel Foucault's program for "a historical ontology of ourselves" provides the basis for a fresh approach to investigation. The basic tools of qualitative research - interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and analysis of discourse - are re-forged in order to articulate how our way of living makes us who we are, and so empower us to change this form of life.Editorial ReviewsReview "The sweep of the material is breathtaking. Few writers will be familiar across the whole range of theorists covered here! The Science of Qualitative Research should be made compulsory reading for students beginning a course in the social sciences, or entering a postgraduate and/or graduate research program in any discipline." - Andy Blunden"In this critical mapping of the history of qualitative inquiry, Martin Packer soars majestically through an expansive epistemological terrain. Dissecting dualist contradictions he challenges us to take up the radical potential of post-modern approaches and revel in the emergent, co-constituted, interpretivist nature of the project. This extraordinary text manages to be both scholarly and accessible while offering a vision of a moral, emancipatory and transformative way of doing research." - Linda Finlay, the Open University, UK"This book is badly needed in the behavioral and social sciences. Indeed, it should be required reading for any serious student of methods or methodologies. It is a veritable tour de force of the prominent figures, difficult problems, and imperfect solutions besetting the various modes of inquiry. Qualitative research was intended to cure many of these ills, but, as Packer so cogently argues, the hidden dualism of this investigative approach has prevented it from realizing its full potential, leading us to ignore or misunderstand not only important modes of inquiry but also vital forms of life. With this penetrating analysis as backdrop, Packer then reforges qualitative research as he demonstrates fresh ways of studying life and living, all in elegant, crystal clear, and accessible prose." - Brent D. Slife, Brigham Young University"....interesting, well written, and very informative.... Researchers interested in the science of qualitative research will find this an important read.... Highly recommended...." - P.J. Venturelli, Valparaiso University, CHOICE"....The title of the book will draw readers. Qualitative research is a burgeoning field, and closure on its full definition is years away. The book's array of names and theories is formidable...." - Thomas F. As the popularity of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth attests, the environment has become an increasingly important issue in the minds of most people. In A Dictionary of Environment and Conservation, Chris Park offers a comprehensive reference work for everyone concerned about the future of our planet. This comprehensive dictionary contains over 8,500 informative entries on all aspects of the environment and conservation, embracing a broad spectrum of concerns, including sustainable development, biodiversity, environmental ethics, philosophy and history, resource management, sociology, and environmental policy. In addition to its wide-ranging, concise definitions, the Dictionary includes thirty highlighted entries on topics such as Antarctica, Gaia hypothesis, Chernobyl, genetic engineering, the Kyoto Protocol, ozone depletion, and the United Nations Conference on Environmental Development. It is important to note that, unlike other books in this area, the dictionary addresses not only the scientific side of conservation and the environment, but also social, legal, political and economic aspects. Readers will find clear, concise coverage of international treaties, movements, trusts and organizations, as well as biographies of key figures in environmental science. The volume also boasts wide coverage of terms relating to rural / community development and participation, an area that plays an increasingly crucial role in managing the environment and biodiversity. The dictionary concludes with a valuable selection of 10 appendices, including international hazard assessment scales such as the Beaufort scale, the Richter scale, Torino asteroid and comet impact hazard scale, and the Fujita tornado scale, plus the geologic timescale and an appendix of useful websites for further study. Concise and wide-ranging, this is an essential work of reference for students and professionals, and anyone with an interest in the environment and conservation., Oxford University Press 2007 1st edition., 6<
