There is a report of a conversation between St. Silouan and a hermit, who expressed his satisfaction at the prospect of nonbelievers burning in hell. ''Obviously upset, the Staretz said, 'Tell me, supposing you went to paradise and there looked down and saw somebody burning in hell-fire -- would you feel happy?' 'It can't be helped. It would be their own fault,' said the hermit. The Staretz answered him with a sorrowful countenance: 'Love could not bear that,' he said. 'We must pray for all...''' The Love that ''could not bear that'' was, along with the humility that could obey the command ''keep thy mind in hell and despair not,'' the most striking feature of St. Silouan's life. Such love cannot be contained or compartmentalized. It overflows to all creation -- for enemies, animals and plants, and even the fallen angels. Here we hear unmistakable echoes of St. Isaac the Syrian (and naturally of Elder Zossima in <i>Brothers Karamazov</i>).
