[ED: Softcover], [PU: VDM Verlag Dr. Müller], Over the last few years, the rapid advancement of 3Dscanning technologies has brought huge amount ofhigh-fidelity surface models and volumetric datasets. To effectively model, analyze and reuse thesemodels become research thrusts in computer graphics,CAGD, vision, visualization, and virtual reality. This book covers a fundamental problem called shapemapping, i.e. computing bijective correspondencebetween shapes, which can facilitate many ofaforementioned tasks. One direct application ofmapping is non-rigid alignment for shapecomparison/retrieval or deformation tracking. Anotherapplication is transforming properties, computation,or analysis of one object to another object (domain)for more efficient or robust process. Despite itsimportance, existing parameterization methods are notadequate to map general shapes with complicatedtopology and geometry. Recent research from theauthor of finding effective mapping methods for 2Dand 3D manifolds is discussed here. It not onlyprovides fundamental progress in understanding andcomputing this fundamental geometric problem, butalso explores great potential of this research inbroad areas of geometric and visual computing.
