Hardback. New. Is it true that the ancient Indians had no sense of History? The book begins with this question, and points out how the ways of perceiving the past could be culture-specific and how the concept of historical traditions can be useful in studying the various ways of memorising and representing the past, even if those ways do not necessarily correspond to the methodology of the Occidental discipline called 'History'. Ancient India had several historical traditions, and the book focuses on one of them, the itihasa. It also shows how the Mahabharata is the best illustration of this tradition, and how a historical study of the contents of the text, with comparison with and corroboration from other contemporary sources and traditions, may help us restore the text in its original context in the bardic historical tradition about the Later Vedic Kurus. Is the Mahabharata then an authentic history? This book does not claim so. However, it shows how the text had originated as a critical reflection on a great period of transition, how it dealt with the conflicting philosophies of the transitional period, how it propounded its thesis by creating new kinds of heroes such as Yudhisthira and Krsna, and how the text was reworked when it was canonized by the brahmanas, 6, Motilal Banarsidass . Hardcover. New. Here is the magnificent attempt made at a constructive survey of Indian psychology. In the words of the author, Äthe philosophical literature of India is not only rich in metaphysics, but also in psychology, logic, ethics, aesthetics, and epistemology. There is no system of Indian philosophy which has not advanced a theory of knowledge, and which has not appealed to the facts of experience. Every school of philosophy has made valuable contributions to psychology, logic, ethics and other mental sciences.êThe work is divided into three volumes. Volume One makes a minute and detailed discussion of the problems of perception and cognition. It throws light on different topics from the different standpoints of Indian thought. Volume Two deals with the Psychology of Emotions, Alankara, Aesthetic sentiments, Nascent Love, Ardent Love, Sex and Psychology of religion. It deals with Rupa Goswamiês analysis of devotion and sentiments of devotion and refers to Jiva Goswamiês views. This is the most comprehensive book based on Sanskrit works. Volume Three is exclusively devoted to the analysis of epistemology and its perceptional aspects.Indian psychology created a new standard in scholarly work on its first publication by Kegan Paul in the thirties. The present reprint of all the three volumes of this classic meets the needs of students and teachers of Indian Psychology as well as the general reader interested in the study of Indian philosophical - psychological literature., Motilal Banarsidass, 6<

What of the more brain-like, connectionist computers: could they really understand, even if digital computers cannot? This collection of classic and contemporary readings (which includes an editor's introduction and an up-to-date reading list) provides a clearly signposted pathway into hotly disputed philosophical issues at the heart of artificial intelligence., 6, Motilal Banarsidass .
