W. Norton & Company. New. W W Norton & Company, 2018 New A sweeping, global history of the rise of the factory and its effects on societyWe live in a factory-made world: modern life is built on three centuries of advances in factory production, efficiency, and technology But giant factories have also fueled our fears about the future since their beginnings, when William Blake called them "dark Satanic mills" Many factories that operated over the last two centuries?such as Homestead, River Rouge, and Foxconn?were known for the labor exploitation and class warfare they engendered, not to mention the environmental devastation caused by factory production from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution up to todayIn a major work of scholarship that is also wonderfully accessible, celebrated historian Joshua B Freeman tells the story of the factory and examines how it has reflected both our dreams and our nightmares of industrialization and social change He whisks readers from the textile mills in England that powered the Industrial Revolution and the factory towns of New England to the colossal steel and car plants of twentieth-century America, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union and on to today's behemoths making sneakers, toys, and cellphones in China and VietnamThe giant factory, Freeman shows, led a revolution that transformed human life and the environment He traces arguments about factories and social progress through such critics and champions as Marx and Engels, Charles Dickens, Alexander Hamilton, Henry Ford, and Joseph Stalin He chronicles protests against standard industry practices from unions and workers' rights groups that led to shortened workdays, child labor laws, protection for organized labor, and much moreIn Behemoth, Freeman also explores how factories became objects of great wonder that both inspired and horrified artists and writers in their time He examines representations of factories in the work of Charles Sheeler, Margaret Bourke-White, Charlie Chaplin, Diego Rivera, and Edward BurtynskyBehemoth tells the grand story of global industry from the Industrial Revolution to the present It is a magisterial work on factories and the people whose labor made them run And it offers a piercing perspective on how factories have shaped our societies and the challenges we face now30 illustrations, W. In January 1755, Major General Edward Braddock was sent by Great Britain on a mission to drive France once and for all from the New World. Accompanied by the largest armed expeditionary force ever sent to North America, Braddock's primary target was the Forks of the Ohio, where he planned to seize Fort Duquesne and then march north into Canada. After landing in Alexandria, Virginia, and organizing his troops and supply chain, Braddock and his expedition began its nearly 250-mile trek, heroically cutting through uncharted wilderness, fording rivers, and scaling the Appalachian mountains, all while hauling baggage and heavy artillery. Braddock was joined on this epic mission by a young Virginia colonel, George Washington, and others who would later play major roles in the American Revolution, including Horatio Gates, Thomas Gage, and Charles Lee; among those driving the expedition's wagons were Daniel Boone and Daniel Morgan. Having withstood the harsh frontier and finally marching upon Fort Duquesne on a hot July morning, Braddock's exhausted column was ambushed by a combined French and Indian force. Over two-thirds of Braddock's British and colonial troops were killed or wounded, including Braddock himself, struck by a bullet in the chest while attempting to rally his disoriented troops. George Washington miraculously escaped harm despite four bullet holes through his clothing. With this battle, North America became the greatest stake in the global war between France and Great Britain. Crocker tells the riveting story of one of the most important events in colonial America. Not only did Braddock's expedition have a profound impact on American political and military developments, this fateful march laid the foundation for the National Pike, the major road for westward expansion, launched the career of George Washington, and sowed the seeds of dissent between England and its colonies that would ultimately lead to the American Revolution., Westholme Publishing, LLC, 2009, 5, San Francisco, CA The Book Club of California, 1987. A master storyteller's account of how a few men of vision created one of the most exciting missionary organizations of modern times - the Columbans, who have been part of the modern history of China and Southeast Asia. From the author of "The Left Hand of God" and "Lillies of the Field", both of which were made into films. Fr. Edward "Ned" Galvin was born in Ireland in 1882, the oldest in a family of seven children. After he was ordained to the Catholic priesthood, he realized that there were more priests in his native land than parishes. So Ned Galvin immigrated to the United States and turned a struggling church in Brooklyn into a thriving parish. But Father Galvin had a secret desire to do missionary work. He was especially attracted to China and had read all the books on the subject his local library could provide. Finally, his wish was granted, and he set out with a group of dedicated helpers on a mission to the Far East. William E. Barrett created this colorful, dramatic portrait of an unusual man whose strong Catholic faith helped him survive the horrors and heartbreak of his demanding mission to China., Sheed & Ward, 1967., 0, Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, 1996-04-01. New. $19.95 * The American Institute of International Law was established in 1912 by James Brown Scott and Dr. Alejandro Alvarez, a distinguished Chilean international lawyer. It aimed primarily to foster better relations between the United States and Latin America. Active until 1938, it submitted several recommendations concerning international organizations, including 30 draft projects to the Pan American Union, which placed 27 of them before the International Commission of American Jurists for the Codification of International Law. Among the subjects were statehood, aliens, law of treaties, diplomatic and consular agents, neutrality at sea, asylum, duties of states in the event of civil war, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. No less than thirteen of these drafts were incorporated into the codifications produced by the Commission. This volume documents the campaign to create the American Institute of International Law and reproduces the original proposal and the principal documents leading to the creation of the Institute. In a broader sense, it offers an interesting legal perspective on the history of inter-American relations and the period when international lawyers began to influence the direction American of foreign policy., 2010, 0, Newport, R.I.: Naval War College, 1981. University of California Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnology, Volume 17, number 1. 1st edition.Paul Radin (April 2, 1883 February 21, 1959) is a widely read American cultural anthropologist and folklorist of the early twentieth century. Born the son of a rabbi in the cosmopolitan Polish city of Lodz, he became a student of Franz Boas at Columbia, where he counted Edward Sapir and Robert Lowie among his classmates. He engaged in years of productive fieldwork among the Winnebago (Hocàk) Indians, primarily from 1908-1912, culminating in 1923 with the publication of his magnum opus, The Winnebago Tribe. In 1929, as a result of his fieldwork, he was able to publish a grammar of the nearly extinct language of the Wappo people of the San Francisco Bay area. Late in his career he edited several anthologies of folk tales from different continents. His most enduring publication to date is The Trickster (1956), which includes essays by the pioneering scholar of Greek mythology, Karl Kerényi, and the prominent psychoanalyst C. G. Jung. Radin taught at a number of colleges and universities, never staying at any one more than a few years. At various times he held appointments at University of California, Berkeley; Mills College, Fisk University, Black Mountain College, Kenyon College, and the University of Chicago. He concluded his career at Brandeis, where he was chairman of the Department of Anthropology. . Anibal Buitrón was born 22 January 1914 in Otavalo, Ecuador. Earned master's degree in anthropology at University of Chicago in 1950. Had a Gugenheim Fellowship in 1949. Co-author (with the anthropologist John Coller) of the well-known book The Awakening Valley (1949). During his career he worked with the Pan American Union (of the Organization of American States) and with UNESCO. In these positions he played important roles in the development of indigenista-oriented anthropology in Latin America. Retired to Watsonville, California. "This is a concise but comprehensive survey of the political systems of the United Kingdom, the USA, the USSR, the French Fifth Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany, in a comparative form, linked and organized by reference to Easton's model of the political system. Where appropriate and illuminating, illustrations from countries other than these five are used. Conceptual and definitional problems - what is a 'party system'?, what distinguishes a 'federation' from a 'confederation'? - are dealt with, and the historical dimension informs the book throughout. The five countries treated are compared individually in each chapter, but classifications or groupings are identified where appropriate. The conclusion draws together the salient points from the earlier chapters to consider the extent to which the USSR and western democracies are quite distinct, or possibly converging, forms of political system.". In a broader sense, it offers an interesting legal perspective on the history of inter-American relations and the period when international lawyers began to influence the direction American of foreign policy., 2010, 0, Newport, R.I.: Naval War College, 1980. In a broader sense, it offers an interesting legal perspective on the history of inter-American relations and the period when international lawyers began to influence the direction American of foreign policy., 2010, 0, Newport, R.I.: Naval War College, 1980. Early days in Oceana County, MI, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data this new 214-page spiral-bound book titled: Oceana County, Michigan, USA This is a reprint of Oceana County Pioneers and Business Men of To-Day, written by L.M. Hartwick and W.H. Tuller and published at Pentwater, MI, in 1890. The tri-color cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. The book, printed on 60# opaque paper, has 214 pages. However, because we use a 2-up format on 11" x 8.5" paper, it contains over 400 pages of the original book. Among the subjects included are: Various conjections as to why the county was named Oceana; Early history; Boundaries established; a list of settlers prior to 1855; Local Government and Society; History of the county in the pre-Civil War era; Enlistment of Indian braves in the Civil War; Trials, elections, newspapers, schools, churches, pigeons, a women's crusade, businesses, L.D. Eaton, Judge Giddings, Judge Littlejohn, the Wreck of the Lamont, the Alonzo Irons mystery including a letter from Allen Pinkerton, a short-lived dog tax, and numerous other items, events and bits of history and trivia too numerous to mention. There is a separate page Called "Gazetteer of the Village of Pentwater" listing businesses. A chapter on municipalities concerns Pentwater, Shelby, Hart, Claybanks, Weare, Benona, Golden, Elbridge, Leavitt, Walkerville, Newfield, Hesperia, Perry, Crystal, Greenwood, Grant, Otto, and Colfax. A Chapter on secret and social organizations has numerous names and sketches of men. The chapter titled Representative and Judicial also has many men mentioned, some with bios and/or drawings.
