Since her first appearance on screen in 'Mary Poppins',Julie Andrews has played a series of memorable roles that have endeared her to generations. But she has never told the story of her life before fame.Until now. In 'Home: a Memoir of My Early Years',Julie takes her readers on a warm, moving and often humorous journey from a difficult upbringing in war-torn Britain to the brink of international stardom in America. Her memoir begins in 1935,when Julie was born to an aspiring vaudevillianmother and a teacher father, and takes readers to 1962,when Walt Disney himself saw her on Broadway, and cast her as the world's most famous nanny. Along the way,she weathered the London Blitz of WW2; her parents painful divorce;her mother's turbulent second marriage to Canadian tenor Ted Andrews and a childhood spent on radio,in music hall and giving concert performances all over England.Julie's professional career began at the age of 12,and in 1948 she became the youngest solo performer ever to participate in a Royal Command Performance before the Queen. When only 18,she left home for the United States to make her Broadway debut in 'The Boyfriend',and thus began her meteoric rise to stardom. 'Home' is filled with numerous anecdotes, including stories of performing in 'My Fair Lady' with Rex Harrison on Broadway and in the West End and in 'Camelot' on Broadway with Richard Burton; and her first marriage to famed set and costume designer Tony Walton.'Home' culminates with the birth of their daughter Emma and the call from Hollywood and what lay beyond. Featuring over fifty personal photographs, many never before seen, this is the personal memoir Julie Andrew's audiences have been waiting for. Born of royalty, living in an elegant palace, feasting on plentiful, delicious food, they had no worries, no concerns. Their extravagant and decadent lifestyle excluded any thought or concern for the poor or the hungry. They had no idea how the other half lived, nor did they care. Until one day, they were evicted suddenly and unexpectedly from their lap of luxury, and found themselves living in a dumpster, scrounging for scraps of food in a dilapidated alley. Now the two brothers constantly fought misery and hunger. Convinced that there was no end to their misery, they gave up hope. But then one day, they met a stranger in that alley--a stranger who delivered a message to them that would change their whole lives! But who or what was that stranger? And what was the message that would transform the lives of two very selfish brothers? ., Zaccheus Entertainment, 2016, 3, London : Chatto & Windus, 2001. 2nd edition. Softcover. Summary: ""London is perhaps the most important study of the city ever written, and confirms Ackroyd's status as what one critic has called ""our age's greatest London imagination. Much of Peter Ackroyd's work has been concerned with the life and past of London but this new work is his definitive account of the city. For Ackroyd, London is a living organism, with its own laws of growth and change, thus the subtitle A Biography (as opposed to A History). The book differs too, from histories, in the range and diversity of its contents. Ackroyd portrays London from the time of the Druids to the beginning of the twenty-first century, noting magnificence in both epochs, but this is not a simple chronological record. There are chapters on the history of silence and the history of light, the history of childhood and the history of suicide, the history of Cockney speech and the history of drink. London is fully comprehensive, animated by Ackroyd's concern for the close relationship between the present and the past. He describes the peculiar ""echoic"" quality of London whereby its texture and history actively affect the lives and personalities of its citizens. All of Ackroyd's writing has been strongly linked with London - from novels such as Hawksmoor and The Plato Papers through his biographies of what he calls his ""great Cockney visionaries"": Dickens, Blake and Thomas More. Now, at last, his obsession with London takes centre-stage."", London : Chatto & Windus, 2001, 0, Faber and Faber, 2005. New book, 416 pages, some shelf wear to cover. The image of St Paul's that night amid clouds of black smoke immediately became the ultimate symbol of Britain's Blitz defiance. But the reality of this 'Second Great Fire of London', in all its unprecedented destruction and indomitable humanity, is almost lost amid myth and counter-myth. Now, in a stunningly vivid and immediate work of historical storytelling, M.J.Gaskin tells the true story of London's desperate hours. And Blitz shows how, across the Atlantic, Americans agonised over the cost of aiding Britain's struggle against the Nazis - and the cost of letting her fall.. Hard Cover. Mary Wesley published her first novel when she was 70, and went on to write 9 more bestsellers including the dazzling 'The Camoomile Lawn',which was made into a TV series, before her death in 2002 at the age of 89. Wesley was a pen name, derived from the family name of Wellesley. She was born Mary Farmar descended from the Duke of Wellington, and grew up a rebel who believed that she was her mother's least favourite child.Like many girls of her background, she married for escape. She herself summarised the pre-War years as: 'God! When I think of the time I've wasted going to bed with old Etonians.' Her first marriage to Lord Swinfen was brief and conventional. In the late 1930s, she began a fascination with Heinz Ziegler,a Czech university professor and wartime air gunner; his brother,Paul, later a Benedictine monk, also fell under her spell. In 1944,she met her adored second husband,Eric Siepmann,a writer who never managed to make any money at all from writing.Their marriage, which was mercurial and bohemian, lasted until his death. In her later years she enjoyed a relationship with playwright Robert Bolt.,. In between Swinfen and Siepmann, she had a love affair with Czech war hero, Heinz Ziegler, and possibly with his brother at the same time, and in her later years enjoyed a torrid relationship with Robert Bolt. At the outbreak of the Second World War she was, as she put it, 'roped into Intelligence',where she worked on breaking codes.MI5 and her many rackety life during the Blitz eventually inspired her novels, many of which were concerned with multiple wartime love affairs. She wrotew about the atmosphere of the home front, and how the imminence of death loosens the inhibitions, her fction was as sexy and as candid as she was herself. She drew on her eccentric friends and her love of Cornwall and the West Country, while the darkness of her novels was illuminated by a caustic sense of the ridiculous. Her style has been described as arsenic without the old lace. 'Wild Mary' is a remarkable book about a woman who was courageous, sensual, talented and ruthless.Readers will enjoy her story not only for its witty anecotes and devastating one-liners,but also for the intimate portrait it builds of a multi-layered personality in which much was hidden.Mary Wesley talked freely to the author - yet took some of her screts to the grave, leaving behind a number of fascinating clues. Previous owners name on the title page."The first full-length biography of George Ingle Finch - maverick Australian mountaineer, scientist, concert pianist and father of actor Peter Finch.George Ingle Finch, mountaineer, soldier, scientist, rebellious spirit, boy from the bush, was in his day one of the most famous men in the world. In 1922 he stood at the highest point on Everest, a feat not bettered for 30 years. He invented the predecessor to the puffer jacket and pioneered the use of oxygen in climbing. A World War I hero whose skills also helped save London from burning to the ground during the Blitz of World War II, he was a renowned scientist who was personally chosen by Nehru, the first Indian prime minister, to help lead his nation into the modern world. With a private life torn by war and misguided by social norms, a reputation as an outsider among the British alpine climbing establishment, and some rough and ready 'colonial' habits, Finch was a brilliantly colourful character - so why has he vanished from the pages of history? In this first full-length biography, Robert Wainwright surveys the man who is now best known as the father of Academy award-winning actor Peter Finch - but who was so much more.", ABC Books, 2015, 4, London: Bantam Press, 2010. Used. Stephen Swan is amazed when he hears that the uncle he thought had been killed in the Blitz is actually alive. For nearly four decades, Eldritch Swan has been locked away in an Irish prison and now, at last, has been released. Shocked and suspicious, Stephen listens to the old man?s story and is caught up in a tale that begins at the dawn of World War II, when Eldritch worked for an Antwerp diamond dealer with a trove of Picassos?highly valuable paintings that later disappeared. Stephen, who finds his uncle by turns devious, charming, and brazen, then meets Rachel Banner, a beautiful American who may have inherited the Picassos?and is determined to see justice done for her family. But in this tale of revenge and redemption, justice is the ultimate illusion. Eldritch, Stephen, and the woman Stephen has fallen in love with soon find themselves fighting for their lives?against sinister forces still guarding a secret that must never be revealed., Bantam Press, 2010, 0, London: William Collins, 1943. An unmarked copy-" Monumental changes are occurring on the planet. Yet, most people are unaware of them. In God's Last Offer, environmentalist Ed Ayres paints a vivid "big picture" of where the world is headed. He identifies a lethal combination of events -- radical climate changes, increasing species extinction, unsustainable consumption, and exploding human populations -- and presents a blueprint for a radical shift of policies and priorities to avoid a cataclysm." Kirkus Reviews: "Carefully researched science journalism and alarmist polemic mingle in an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it treatise. Ayres, editorial director of the Worldwatch Institute, uses a wealth of statistics and published reports to trace what he calls ``a blitz of enormous biological and physical alterations in the world that has been sustaining us.'' This blitz, he goes on to say, comes to us in the form of four ``spikes'': a surge in the presence of carbon gases in the atmosphere, causing the by now well-reported increase in global warming; a marked rise in the rate of extinction of plant and animal species; an increase in the human consumption of natural resources; and a potentially cataclysmic rise in the human population. Ayres says these spikes cannot be understood in isolation; they all feed into one another, with the mere presence of more people requiring more wood, water, plants, and animals. Ayres's use of science in making this foundational argument is solid and seemingly inarguable. He takes a more emotional tone with the second part of his book, which is directed toward policy issues. Why he asks, does it seem as if no one cares that the world is in grave danger? He argues that the media, operating under the guise of objectivity, do little to convey the urgency of the bad environmental news he reports. ``When the media,'' he writes, ``dwell on crimes, crashes, and scandals, they provide a rich diet of distractions from news of the spikes that are killing us. For those who have interests in keeping the public thus distracted, no conspiracy is necessary; all that's needed is to let the media do what they already have a strong financial incentive to do namely, to let the corporations whose advertising sustains them run rampant. Ayres's apocalyptic tone is at odds with his earlier cool scientific rationality, and it may cause some readers to dismiss his well-made glimpse into a difficult future as simply more doomsday-speak."-Some wear on cover., Four Walls Eight Windows, 2000, 2.5, London: William Collins, 1943. The City of Plymouth has undergone many changes since it's foundation as a tiny fishing port. In his book 'Plymouth - A New History' the late Crispin Gill produces a standard history of Plymouth that has remained in print for over four decades.Starting with the Norman Conquest the book follows each major development of the city, its social and political upheavals, and the principal figures who emerged to become an indelible part of Plymouth's history, and that of the nation. The book concludes with the destruction of much of the old city during the bombing raids suffered during WW2. Containing over 150 photographs, maps and other illustrations, 'Plymouth - An Illustrated History' provides the reader with a concise and exciting narrative of what made Plymouth into one of the world's great maritime cities.
