La terminologie des genres chansonniers a suscité l'intérêt des musicologues, médiévistes, ethnomusicologues et bibliographes soucieux d'une meilleure compréhension de la production chansonnière. L'étude du vocabulaire chansonnier français met en relief l'existence d'un genre littéraire plus ou moins bref dénommé par le mot chanson. C'est du mot chanson et de sa famille lexicale, depuis ses origines en ancien français jusqu'à nos jours en français moderne, dont il sera question.La présente étude entend créer un vocabulaire opératoire utile pour l'avancement des recherches relatives à l'étude théorique de l'objet-chanson. Elle conceptualise l'objet-chanson et sémantiser les lexèmes de la famille de chanson dans une approche historique des cultures franco-française et québécoise. Le corpus utilisé est formé de documents écrits ( corpus linguistiques ) au sein desquels se matérialise le vocabulaire en contexte. Nous avons aussi considéré la réflexion sur l'usage des signes servant à nommer ces phénomènes ( corpus métalinguistique ). Environ 500 dictionnaires de langue et thématique et 900 œuvres littéraires (essais sur la chanson, etc.) constituent le corpus. Nous avons nommé ce va-et-vient interprétatif entre l'onomasiologie et la sémasiologie l' ingénierie lexicale, évoquant l'activité de résolution de problèmes propres à l'ingénieur.
