This text provides one approach to understanding the language choices used by American Sign Language and English bilinguals. The text provides a summary of language usage within the American Deaf community. An explanation of Myers-Scotton's (1993, 2002) Matrix-Language-Frame (MLF) model frames this investigation into language choices made by bi-modal bilinguals. Language choices of two different signed language interpreters in different settings were analyzed. The study supports the applicability of the MLF model to bi-modal bilingual codeswitching. Additionally, it appears that ASL is much less activated when bilinguals use Simultaneous Communication.
