It is the fruit of two extended trips to China in 1979, totaling five month - five months in which she was able to travel freely, following her own itinerary some 40,000 miles back and forth across the mainland, with almost 100 percent access to everything she chose to photograph, accompanied only by her interpreter. She photographed Vice Chairman Liao, who had gone on the Long March, a Shanghai millionaire, the fascinating, anonymous, ordinary country and city people, from a 6-year old girl nervously enduring a permanent wave to the eternal peasant in China's eternal rice paddies.
And here is the way people live - those whose homes are in underground caves and Mongolian yurts, those who live in housing developments; here are their hospitals, their schools, their stores, their amusements, their responsibilities. Here are also the 54 million people of the 'minority' groups, utterly different in look from anything we conceive of as 'Chinese,' still living the traditional life of their ancestors.
