The most dynamic fiction of our time, science fiction is also the fastest-expanding, both in readership and in the range of authors who employ it. The established masters--mostly American, a few Englishmen--continue to show the way. The established outlets--American s-f magazines mostly, some original book anthologies--continue to provide most of its nurture. But faithful reading of a handful of American publications is no longer sufficient to keep up with the most exciting work being done. Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss have established this series as definitive in the field by looking much further afield. This year's selection is built around the established sources, but includes also a brilliant tale by the Brazilian Andre Carneiro; an astonishing and delightful story by a young Ghanaian, Victor Sabah; and other unexpected pleasures.. The Grand Babylon Hotel is yet another exciting novel by English novelist and journalist Arnold Bennett. Published in 1902, the novel attracted great attention, mainly due to its original style and intricate story about a grand hotel, strange occurrences and the disappearance of an important German Prince.

The story unfolds mainly in what we get to know as the Grand Babylon Hotel. The American multi-millionaire Theodore Racksole arrives with his daughter Nella. The exclusive hotel is filled with extravagant guests whom are served to the highest standards by the waiters and clerks there. However, when Nella asks to be served some Bass beer to go along with the steak, she is refused. Her father then goes on to buy the hotel so that her daughter can have what she wanted. He eventually purchases the exclusive hotel for the price of 400,000 pounds and a guinea, the latter being his way of allowing the former owner to feel that he managed to bargain for the price.

However, strange things are starting to occur at the hotel. The head waiter named Jules is starting to wink at the friend of her daughter. When he is dismissed, Miss Spencer, who had been a great clerk for the past few years, disappears. Then Prince Eugen, a German Prince, is supposed to arrive at the hotel, but never shows up. A body then appears, and until anyone manages to figure out what is happening, it disappears.

The novel is filled with intricacies and well-knit plots that will keep you reading until the end. Mystery, dark secrets, love affairs, disappearances and a German Prince are at the center of The Grand Babylon Hotel, IDB Productions, 2016-01-01, 6, Theodore Presser Company. Softcover. Very Good.

Softcover. Very Good.
